For Good Connections : Orange Belgium striving for a safer digital world

In line with our raison d´être “As a trusted partner, Orange gives everyone the keys to a responsible digital world”, we are reinforcing our long-standing commitment to protecting young people against digital abuse: the first issue we will address is cyberbullying before turning our attention to online hate and hyperconnectivity.

A mobilisation now defined under the For Good Connections initiative.

Hyperconnectivity and cyberbullying: a growing social phenomenon

The internet and mobile phones form an integral part of children’s lives from their earliest age. Screens of all kinds are proliferating and the time spent in front of them can add up to more than 7 hours a day, for both adults and children. Our children can also be exposed to inappropriate contents, violence or online harassment.

The digital universe is undeniably a source of progress, a lever for education, entertainment and social connection. Nevertheless, it wasn’t designed for children and it isn’t free of risks.

Orange Belgium´s commitments for combating digital abuses

We are initiating a series of preventive and educational actions to help children and their parents adopt good practices so they can use digital tools as responsibly and safely as possible.

In this first phase devoted to cyberbullying, we will be meeting with young people in order to better identify their needs. We will then be able to offer them concrete solutions in the medium term. Orange Belgium believes that feeling good online is within everyone’s reach.

Cyberbullying

A growing issue despite increasing media coverage, often marked by the silence of the three protagonists: harassed, harassers and witnesses. Discussions conducted by Orange with associations, experts and schools reveal that many children are reluctant to speak out for fear of being stigmatised or of making their situation worse.

Orange wants to reverse this trend and encourage people to speak out by identifying three concrete actions where digital becomes a solution, not just the problem:

On the screen

Orange is supporting the film TKT which seeks to raise the awareness of young people and their families about cyberbullying. This film is intended to reach a broad public in the hope of opening up a dialogue about this major societal problem.

On the social networks

Influencers and actors from the film TKT will share the right behaviours to adopt to raise awareness of the problem of cyberbullying and the invisibility of those affected.

Today’s young people are tomorrow’s social actors. We believe it is our responsibility to help build a safer digital world for them, a commitment that we will be pursuing with all of our stakeholders.
