For a greener future Scope 3 and circular economy

Reducing the carbon footprint is at the heart of our environmental commitment. Since Scope 3 represents the majority of our carbon footprint, we are sharpening our focus on greenhouse gas emissions generated by our value chain, meaning emissions generated by our suppliers, service providers and customers.”

A commitment Our key actions for more responsible consumption

Working with our suppliers and customers to reduce indirect emissions

We engage in dialogue with our suppliers to promote emission reductions. We integrate sustainability criteria into our procurement processes to encourage suppliers to cut their emissions.

Developing eco-design

Developing eco-design is a pillar of Orange’s circular economy policy aimed at reducing use of critical metals, improving product sustainability and recyclability. Since 2021, Orange Belgium has implemented a constantly improving eco-design framework developed by Orange Group. This framework incorporates environmental criteria in our procurement processes to promote more sustainable products.

An internal eco-design coordinator and dedicated training courses are available to employees. Our achievements include the new range of Livebox routers (cable and fibre) and repeater in 2022, designed using recycled or recyclable plastic, which saves energy and facilitates repairs. The latest TV box optimises energy consumption with an advanced standby mode.

Increase in refurbished mobile phones in our sales

Pour atteindre nos objectifs de décarbonation, nous mettons l'accent sur l'augmentation des ventes de mobiles reconditionnés.

Cette initiative réduit l'utilisation de matières premières et promeut un modèle circulaire.

Support for the Walloon region

Orange Belgique soutient également la campagne « Le numérique en mode responsable » lancée par la région wallonne, qui sensibilise le public aux impacts environnementaux du numérique et promeut des pratiques plus responsables.

Encouraging responsible use of digital technology

Durability Deploying the circular economy

In our core activities (networks, data centres, etc.), we are extending product life cycles, notably:

  • Through the OSCAR programme (an internal marketplace in Orange Group) for IT and network equipment.

  • And the RE Programme for our customers. Our RE programme is designed to promote more sustainable consumption and use of mobile and landline devices by encouraging customers to buy refurbished devices, repair and give a second life to their old phone through refurbishment or recycling.

Repair

Repairing mobile phones via repair services in Orange shops is a key aspect of extending their useful life.

Take-back

Collection of used mobile phones: the goal is to maximise recovery of these devices, either by refurbishing them while still usable, or directing them to appropriate recycling channels when obsolete.

For each device traded in, we donate €2 to the Natagora association to support environmental protection in Belgium.

Recyclage

In each Orange shop, you can find a Recupel collection bin where you can drop off small electrical appliances for recycling.

  • Traded-in smartphones that are not in good enough condition to be resold, are recycled to recover valuable and rare raw materials such as gold, copper, cobalt, silver, etc.
  • With the help of our partner, the Belgian non-profit organisation Recupel, up to 90%* of these raw materials are recovered and reused as electronic components in new devices and cables.

Refurbishment

Increasing the proportion of refurbished mobiles in sales is a key lever for Orange and its customers to reduce the carbon footprint of phones and reduce the use of raw materials and rare metals.

Orange has two refurbished mobile phone options: the website of our partner Recommerce's has 8,500 references including Apple, Samsung, etc. Orange also offers its own refurbished phones (Apple).

We call on two partners to refurbish our phones: Back2Buzz and Recommerce. Back2Buzz is a Belgian company that refurbishes phones in Belgium. Recommerce is a French company that refurbishes phones in several European countries.

In other words, a second-hand smartphone? Not quite!

  • Refurbished devices are tested, reset (100% of data is erased) and, if necessary, defective parts are repaired or replaced.
  • The battery is replaced if its capacity is lower than 85% to ensure a good long-term experience.
  • Devices come with a two-year warranty.

Choosing a refurbished mobile phone consequently means limiting your environmental impact while purchasing an as-new device at a lower cost.
