Mobistar strengthens its commitment to protecting children when they use mobile internet

Brussels, 11th June 2014 – Mobistar commits to protecting children using mobile internet with a dedicated programme and the offer of a parental control application in partnership with Symantec and its Norton Family solution. These actions provide parents with the necessary information and tools for stimulating dialogue with their children and protecting them when they are browsing the internet on their smartphones. Through these actions Mobistar is contributing to the European Commission’s aim to create a safer internet environment for children.

According to a recent study by GfK Significant, 76% of parents say they are concerned by the content their children are exposed to on the internet and more than 40% would like to have a tool for dialogue and protection. Mobistar’s initiatives are in response to these sentiments.

In order to enable parents to educate their children and help them become more aware, Mobistar is opening a dedicated website that offers parents recommendations on how to use the internet more securely, advice on phones and tariff plans that are suited to children’s use (robust phone, lower emission, suitable price etc.). A brochure containing this information will soon be available in all Mobistar points of sale.

Furthermore, in collaboration with Symantec, the Norton Family application is offered to parents. It enables them to access, from their smartphones, a simplified dashboard and summary of their children’s online activity. Parents and children can agree together on rules of access suited to the children’s age, thus stimulating dialogue.

Norton Family contains several functions for protecting children in their online activity:

  • Web supervision: allows parents to identify sites that are  inappropriate for their children and block their access to them;
  • Search supervision: informs parents what internet searches their children have made and facilitates discussions with them about inappropriate content;
  • Online time supervision: allows parents to teach their children to manage how long they spend on the internet and reduce the time they spend online, and
  • Email alerts: alert parents when children go beyond the agreed limits, for example when their children attempt to visit a blocked site or try to uninstall the application.

As for Norton Family Premier, it includes extended functions:

  • Video check: informs parents what YouTube videos their children  have watched;
  • Applications check: allows parents to set the Android applications their children can use, and
  • Extended usage history: saves a record of children’s internet activity for a period of 90 days.

The Norton Family application is available free on Google Play. The Premier version is offered on its launch at a promotional price in Mobistar shops.
