Orange Belgium supports NTGent innovative solution for the vision and hearing impaired

Orange Belgium is proud to support an NTGent initiative that will allow persons with a vision or hearing impairment to enjoy shows and spectacles to the fullest by using connected tablets offering audio description, sign language and contextual information.

For persons with a vision or hearing impairment, going to the theater is far from easy as audio description of the scenes is not always available, and live sign language interpreting of the text is usually limited to a few performances per season. As inclusion and cultural access for an ever-growing audience is a fundamental aim of NTGent, the Flemish theater company started working on a solution 7 years ago that caters to this niche public and lowers the threshold for those visitors suffering from vision or hearing impairments.

Orange Belgium supported this project by selecting tablets that meet NTGent’s requirements. As too much light would spoil the theatre atmosphere, the sign language interpretation service uses screens that offer ‘real black’, making the S5e by Samsung the perfect choice thanks to its sAMOLED screen.

Tom De Clercq from NTGent reacts: "This initiative has been ten years in the making. In conjunction with Flemish Sign Language interpreting, subtitles and audio description, the 'theatre tablet project' completes what we as ‘The City Theatre of the Future' want to offer our audience. We are incredibly proud of this project and we would like to thank our partners, without whom this would not have been possible, for their support and expertise."

Rigo Gielen, Director Business and Sales B2B from Orange Belgium adds: “We are very proud to support this project that brings together key elements of our own DNA by developing an innovative and technologic solution that achieves inclusion and social benefits. As a responsible telecom operator, we find it extremely important to make optimum use of technology and the creative solution developed by NTGent is a perfect case in point.”
