Mobistar’s reaction to the announcement of Telenet’s decision to purchase Base Company

Back to news index

This Monday 20 April, Mobistar has taken note of Telenet’s decision to buy Base Company (KPN Group). Since this operation must be reported to competition authorities, Mobistar expects them to thoroughly analyse the consequences of the purchase in the interest of Belgian consumers, for both landline and mobile telephone services.

This acquisition came as no surprise for Mobistar, since KPN had already declared that Base Company was for sale.

The MVNO contract that currently links Mobistar and Telenet runs until 2017.

This purchase in no way alters Mobistar’s strategy and confirms the relevance of its ambition to become a convergent operator.

Belgium will now have 2 convergent operators for landline and mobile infrastructure (Proximus and Telenet/Base Company). This further reinforces the duopoly of landline players on the Belgian market and should encourage regulators more than ever to improve the conditions for opening the cable market.

This acquisition paves the way for the consolidation of the Belgian market, where Mobistar intends to play a central role.
